Udit Raj, a former Member of Parliament (MP) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) on the 24th of April, joined the Indian National Congress (INC.)

Speaking about his decision of quitting the BJP, Udit Raj said, he was upset with the Party’s decision of not nominating him from the North West Delhi constituency. Mr. Raj is the sitting Member of Parliament (MP) of North West Delhi.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Mr. Raj contested from the North West Delhi and won the Parliamentary seat.

The INC welcomed Udit Raj to the Party and posted a tweet conveying the same.

The BJP, on the 23rd of April, replaced Mr. Raj and nominated singer Hans Raj as the MP candidate from the North West Delhi constituency.

On the 23rd of April Mr. Raj quit the BJP and said, “I trusted the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and merged my Indian Justice Party with the BJP. I now realise many smaller regional parties have benefited more by remaining independent…. I’m deeply hurt that I was not even given a chance to defend myself.”

Raj’s decision of quitting the BJP during the ongoing elections could be a major drawback for the Party. Being a Dalit leader, Mr. Raj has a stronghold and support from the Dalit community, the support of which the BJP may lose in Delhi.

The INC, on the other hand, would benefit from Mr. Raj becoming a member. However, the Party did not decide about the candidature of Mr. Raj in Delhi.

Delhi will contest a total of 7 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, scheduled on the 12th of May 2019.

The major parties contesting the Delhi Lok Sabha elections are the INC, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP.

The results of the Delhi Lok Sabha elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.

Stay tuned for further updates about the Delhi Lok Sabha elections.
