In what comes as an extremely surprising move, J.J. Hospital’s Grant Medical College in Mumbai, Maharashtra imposed a ban on short skirts for women, post a Holi event on the 21st of March this year. The students staged a mass protest against the move, on the 24th of March, refusing to cooperate with the senior authorities.

According to the students, the college issued these rules post a Holi event, held on the 21st of March this year. The rules dictated, men and women should stay at arm’s length. As a sign of protest against the rules, women students wore ankle length clothes and covered their faces in a way that only their eyes were visible.

“The instructions were issued by Dean Dr. Ajay Chandanwale and Warden Shilpa Patil. They said women must not wear short skirts, should sit apart from men at events and return to their hostels before 10 P.M.,” students said.

After the allegations made by the students, Dean Dr. Ajay Chandanwale issued a statement saying, “The expectation from female students is that they dress appropriately. This alone was my message to the students. There was some chaos during Holi. If there is any grudge or objection, we will hear the students out.”

Earlier last year, the Government Medical College (GMC) of Amritsar banned girls from wearing skirts, t shirts, jeans and shorts on the college premises.

However, unlike the rules issued by J.J. College, the college in Amritsar set a dress code for the men as well. Instead of jeans and trousers, the male students were required to dress entirely in formals, as per a circular passed by the college officials.

These rules were issued in an attempt to ask girls to dress properly and to ensure the students enrolled there are safe.

With the protests lasting an entire day, the college officials were forced to come up with a statement as soon as possible. However, apart from the statement given by Dean Dr. Ajay, no other statements were made.

Stay tuned for more updates.
