A Punjabi couple, Shamsher Singh, 67 years old, and Navpreet Kaur, 24 years old, recently got married and asked for police protection.

Shamsher Singh of Balian village and Navpreet Kaur of Dhuri village fell in love and got married going against their families’ wishes. The couple tied the knot during January 2019 in Chandigarh, Punjab.

Afraid of their families, the newly wed couple asked the Punjab and Haryana High Court (HC) for police protection.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered the police of both the States to ensure the couple’s safety and protect them.

Mohit Sadana, the counsel of the couple, said, “It was an odd marriage and the families did not accept this relationship. So, the couple moved the HC, arguing that their lives are in danger from their families and relatives. On February 4, the court directed the SSPs of Sangrur and Barnala district to ensure their safety.”

Speaking about their marriage, Mohit said, “They are adults and have every right to solemnise the marriage. The marriage is legal as neither has a living spouse.”

The Sangrur Police Station received the orders of the HC and will provide protection to the couple.

Stay tuned for further updates.
