Vidisha is only four months old and she has gained the title of ‘Miracle Baby’ at the Parel Hospital. The little girl was unfortunate to be born with a heart defect but to add to her pain she suffered from 6 heart attacks over the last two months.

Vidisha was born to Vishaka and Vinod Waghmare, Kalyan residents. The baby girl will soon be discharged from the hospital. The parents were barely able to pay Rs. 25,000 of the 5 lakh bill which was generously paid by different donors from the hospital.

Vishaka recited the first time they realized Vidisha was ill, “When she was 45 days old, Vidisha vomited after I fed her and fell unconscious. We shook her awake, but she again became unconscious.” They rushed their baby girl to a local nursing home that suggested to take her to B J Wadia Hospital. At the hospital, their baby was diagnosed with transposition of the great arteries, a heart defect.

Dr. Biswas Panda, pediatric cardiac surgeon at Wadia Hospital explained the girl’s situation, “Basically, her heart’s anatomy was opposite of a normal heart.”

Although the function of her heart has improved after the surgery conducted on March 14th by Dr. Biswas, her weak lungs have not. “Correction for the transposition of the great arteries should be done immediately after birth. Else, like in Vidisha’s case, the poorly formed lung got used to a certain pattern and couldn’t adjust to the sudden correction,” explained Dr. Biswas.

The doctor reported Vidisha’s condition after the surgery, “She was in the ICU for 51 days after the surgery, and went into cardiac arrest stage six times due to this imbalance.” It took her heart a total of 15 minutes to resuscitate after one of the heart attacks. The doctors are using a high frequency oscillatory ventilator to stabilize her lungs.

Dr. Suresh Rao, pediatric cardiac surgeon at Kokilaben Ambani Hospital said, “This seems to be a rare case. I have come across cases where a child required the high frequency ventilator after surgery and they have done well.”
