Monsoon Parliament Session: No Confidence Motion Accepted In Lok Sabha

During the first day of the Monsoon Parliament Session, the No Confidence motion was accepted by the Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan today. This is the first time in 15 years the No Confidence motion which was raised by Telugu Desam Party was accepted by the speaker.

Speaker Mahajan said the notice moved by TDP and Congress will be taken up on Friday. About 50 opposition lawmakers stood in support of the No Confidence motion. The Speaker will have to set up a date and time to take up the discussion of the No Confidence motion. This announcement will have to be done with 10 days according to the law.

However, the motion will not endanger the BJP led Government as BJP has 273 members in the Lok Sabha which is far over the halfway mark. Unless the opposition manages to turn BJP lawmakers against their own party there is no hope to win.

During the Budget Session in March, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) led by Chandrababu Naidu moved two No Confidence motions against the Modi Government. The YSR Congress Party led by Jagan Reddy moved one notice against the Government. Both the parties were protesting against the Center for refusing a Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh.

Two minutes into the Lok Sabha and the House was adjourned till noon. As Speaker Sumitra Mahajan walked into the Lower House, the TDP members began sloganeering. Chairman Venkaiah Naidu attempted to calm the crowd who refused to listen. Speaker Mahajan then announced the House was adjourned till noon.

Unfortunately, the Rajya Sabha also failed to continue after the yelling and screaming by the TDP and AIADMK MPs. The Upper House was adjourned for the day. The Special category status issue between the Center and Andhra Pradesh Government is yet to be solved.
