On the 22nd of May, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a charge sheet against three suspected Kashmiri militants. The NIA held the three militants responsible for an attack on the police team at a tourist reception held in Jammu and Kashmir on the 24th of November, 2018.

According to information derived from the NIA, the three suspects, Tahir Ahmad Khan, Haris Mushtaq Khan and Asif Suhail Nadaf, were loyal to the Islamic State of Jammu and Kashmir (ISJK,) a Kashmir based link to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS.) Despite being arrested in November 2018, the case was transferred to the NIA by the Union Home Ministry.

While releasing a statement post the probe, the NIA said, “Investigation unearthed a larger conspiracy of these terrorist elements propagating panIslamic ideology of ISIS by recruiting and radicalising Kashmiri youth towards Jihad and targeting security forces.”

Despite there being links between the ISJK and ISIS, this is the first time the NIA confirmed the presence of these terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. During the search carried out by the NIA, two pistols, 14 live rounds, 3 grenades and an ISIS flag was found.

Post taking possession of the case files in December 2018, the NIA also arrested Majid Khan, another person related to the ISIS and the ISJK. According to the NIA, Majid Khan was responsible for harbouring other people who were a part of the attacks at the reception centre.

The reports from the NIA further said, three other members, Ishfaq Ahmad Sofi, Pervez Ahmad Bhat and Asif Nazir Dar, were also a part of the conspiracy. However, they were all killed during the encounter.

The NIA is still looking for more proof linking the ISJK to the ISIS.

Stay tuned for more updates.
