No Confidence Motion: Ananth Kumar Says Sonia Ji’s Maths Is Weak

A day before the MPs vote on the No Confidence motion, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Ananth Kumar stated, “Sonia Ji’s maths is weak.” The BJP Minister made the comment in regard to the No Confidence motion against the BJP led Government.

Mr. Kumar said, “Sonia ji’s maths is weak. They had calculated similarly in 1996. We know what happened then. Their calculation is wrong yet again. The Narendra Modi government has majority, both, inside and outside Parliament. NDA will vote against the No Confidence motion. NDA plus others will also support us.”

The Minister speaks in reference to the Congress pushing a No Confidence motion against Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government in 1996. This comes after Sonia Gandhi said she was not worried about the numbers ahead of the vote.

During the first day of the Monsoon Parliament Session, the No Confidence motion was accepted by the Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan. This is the first time in 15 years the No Confidence motion which was raised by Congress and Telugu Desam Party was accepted by the speaker.

Speaker Mahajan said the notice moved by TDP and Congress will be taken up on Friday. About 50 opposition lawmakers stood in support of the No Confidence motion. The Speaker will have a discussion on the No Confidence motion on Friday.

While Congress made claims of having enough support in the Lok Sabha, TDP Chief Chandrababu Naidu wrote a letter seeking support. He addressed a two page long letter to all the MPs of the Lok Sabha. The Shiv Sena Party led by Uddhav Thackeray stated the party would vote in favor of the BJP led Government. Aam Aadmi Party on the other end will be present in the Lower House to vote in favor of the No Confidence motion.

In the letter Naidu said, “In view of the continued adamant attitude of the BJP led NDA Government, the TDP Parliamentary Party again moved No Confidence motion against the Modi Government in the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament on July 18th 2018. Hon’ble Speaker Lok Sabha accepted the No Confidence motion and the same is scheduled to be taken up in the house on 20th July 2018.”

However, the motion will not endanger the BJP led Government as BJP has 273 members in the Lok Sabha which is far over the halfway mark. Unless the opposition manages to turn BJP lawmakers against their own party there is no hope to win. The TDP has moved a number of No Confidence motions against the Modi Government after the Center failed to approve the Special Category status for AP.
