No Confidence Motion: Parliament Debate Begins

The No Confidence Motion debate has begun in the Parliament. All eyes in India are on the third day of the Monsoon Parliament Session. Today, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha will chair a debate on the motion and end with a vote.

During the first day of the Monsoon Parliament Session, the No Confidence motion was accepted by the Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan. This was the first time in 15 years the No Confidence motion which was raised by Congress and Telugu Desam Party was accepted by the speaker.

Speaker Mahajan said the notice moved by TDP and Congress will be taken up on Friday. About 50 opposition lawmakers stood in support of the No Confidence motion. The Speaker will have a discussion on the No Confidence motion on Friday.

TDP Chief Chandrababu Naidu wrote a letter seeking support. He addressed a two page long letter to all the MPs of the Lok Sabha. The Shiv Sena Party led by Uddhav Thackeray stated the party would vote in favor of the BJP led Government. Aam Aadmi Party on the other end will be present in the Lower House to vote in favor of the No Confidence motion.

In the letter Naidu said, “In view of the continued adamant attitude of the BJP led NDA Government, the TDP Parliamentary Party again moved No Confidence motion against the Modi Government in the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament on July 18th 2018. Hon’ble Speaker Lok Sabha accepted the No Confidence motion and the same is scheduled to be taken up in the house on 20th July 2018.”

The Congress and other opposition parties have stated it is the debate not the voting. The parties will get an opportunity to make their case against the Government from a much viewed platform. The numbers speak and BJP alone has more than majority in the Lok Sabha.

The BJP lawmakers in the lower House will lose their seat if they vote against their party making BJP’s win assured. The opposition hopes to use this opportunity to expose the Government. They hope to turn the tables in the upcoming 2019 elections with this debate.
