Surjya Narayan Patro, a senior member of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD,) on the 1st of June, was elected as the Assembly Speaker of Odisha.

The Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) who won the Odisha Assembly elections, unanimously elected Mr. Patro during the first Assembly meeting.

The BJD won the Odisha Assembly elections and formed the 16th Odisha Government in the State.

Naveen Patnaik, the Chief Minister of Odisha, proposed the name of Patro for the post. Senior leaders of the Party accepted Patnaik’s proposal and elected Patro.

S.N. Patro said, “I am happy that the House elected me to the post of the speaker unanimously. I thank the leader of the house and chief minister, and all the MLAs for their cooperation.”

S.N. Patro is said to be the 22nd Speaker of the Odisha Assembly, after winning the Odisha Assembly elections, with a majority of 112 seats out of the 147 Assembly seats.

S.N. Patro is a 7 time MLA from Ganjam district, elected 4 times from Mohana and 3 times from Digapahandi, Odisha.

He joined the BJD in 1990 and got a ticket as the MLA candidate from Mohana district, Odisha.

Recently, on the 29th of May, Naveen Patnaik took oath as the Chief Minister of Odisha and expanded his Cabinet.
