Rahul Gandhi, the former President of the Indian National Congress (INC,) on the 4th of July, was declared ‘not guilty’ in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) defamation case.

Dhrutiman Joshi, an activist and lawyer of the RSS, filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi for linking the murder case of journalist Gauri Lankesh to the RSS.

Gauri Lankesh, a journalist, was allegedly murdered at her residence on the 5th of September 2017, in Bengaluru.

Within 24 hours of her death, Rahul Gandhi addressed the media and said, “Anybody who speaks against the ideology of the BJP, against the ideology of the RSS, is pressured, beaten, attacked and even killed.”

Rahul Gandhi indirectly targetted the RSS leaders and the BJP leaders by deeming them as the culprits responsible for the murder of journalist Gauri.

Mr. Joshi, in 2017, filed a complaint against Sonia Gandhi, the Chairperson of the All India Congress Committee (AICC,) the Communists Party of India (Marxist) and Rahul Gandhi. However, the case against Sonia Gandhi and CPI (M) was dismissed later, stating, the whole party cannot be responsible for an individual’s comments.

According to Mr. Joshi, the statement of Mr. Rahul Gandhi after the death of Gauri Lankesh, directly targeted the RSS and the BJP.

On the 4th of July, Mazgaon Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Mumbai granted bail to Rahul Gandhi and asked him to submit a surety amount of Rs. 15,000.

After getting bail, Rahul Gandhi addressed the media and said the “attacks were on” and he was “enjoying the fight.” “It is a battle of ideology. I stand with the poor, the farmers. The fight will continue. I will fight 10 times harder than in the last five years,” Gandhi added.

Eknath Gaikwad, a former Member of Parliament (MP) of the INC, deposited the surety amount.
