A number of computers became victim to a mass cyber attack using ransomware. WannaCry is a ransomware malware that used the security flaw in Microsoft XP operation system to plant the virus. Microsoft XP is an old version that no longer was given technical support from the Microsoft company.

The computers attacked by the virus locked the access to user files with the demand of money. WannaCry affected computers are unable to access the system and a message for $300 in the form of Bitcoin a virtual currency in order to decrypt them. The message also reveals that after three days if the payment is not made, the price will double and eventually the files will be deleted.

In 150 countries, 200,000 have fallen victims to the virus explained Europol Chief Rob Wainwright. Among the high profile, victims are FedEx, US package delivery company, Telefonica, Spanish telecoms company, Renault, French carmakers, Deutsche Bahn, German Rail operator, and Russia’s interior ministry.

It has been reported that this virus is unlike any other. It uses a ransomware along with a worm that scans the internal network and neighboring vulnerable machines are infected. The culprits have used a digital code believed to be developed by US National Security Agency. The code managed to get leaked as part of a document dump.

The culprits are yet to be identified and with today’s technology, the accused have managed to cover their tracks with heavy encryption.

The victims have been urged to not pay the ransom which would act as encouragement for the hackers. Experts have said there is no assurance that they will unblock the files. Paying the ransom would give the hackers leverage and access to the victim’s bank details. Victim’s best option is to cut the system’s network connection which will stop the encryption.

For the ones not yet affected by WannaCry can follow a few steps to stay safe. Start with updating your computer’s operating system. Follow it with downloading a trustworthy antivirus software to detect threats. Backup your system files to avoid getting crippled if the virus attacks, an external backup will give you leverage over the hackers. As additional precaution use basic security protocol, avoid clicking on suspicious links and opening unknown attachments.
