Results For Assembly Elections In Nagaland, Meghalaya And Tripura

The counting of votes for the Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura Assembly Elections have begun. The results will be updated later in the day. In the last two years, the BJP won a majority of seats in Assam and Manipur. This has given them the confidence of bagging the three North East states.    

The Left Front Government rules in Tripura with Chief Minister Manik Sarkar. In Meghalaya Congress rules under Chief Minister Mukul Sangma. The Naga People’s Front (BJP support) is in power in Nagaland with Chief Minister T. R. Zeliang. This will change depending on which party gains the majority votes to form a Government in the State.    

The main candidates contesting in the three states are T. R. Zeliang (Nagaland,) Agatha Sangma (Meghalaya,) Biplab Kumar Deb (Tripura,) Manik Sarkar (Tripura,) Mukul Sangma (Meghalaya) and Neiphiu Rio (Nagaland.)

There are a total of 60 seats in the Assembly Elections in each of the three states. In Nagaland, one seat is for a general candidate while the remaining 59 are reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST.) A total of 196 candidates have contested for the Nagaland Elections out of which five are women.

In Meghalaya 55 constituencies out of the 60 are reserved for ST and the remaining five will be occupied by general candidates. For the 60 seats, 32 women and 338 men have contested in this State.

Tripura, on the other hand, reserved 10 seats for Scheduled Castes and 20 for Scheduled Tribes. The remaining 30 seats will be filled by general candidates.  In Tripura, 297 candidates have contested out of which 20 are women.

BJP was the first to make a win in Nagaland with one seat and leading in 22 seats. In Meghalaya Congress is leading with 18 seats, Left Front Government is leading in Tripura with 34 seats with BJP leading in 21 seats.
