On the 18th of April, three people, including two minors, were arrested for the murder of 16 year old Ashwini Kumar, or Chunnu, the son of a Nalanda based journalist.
Chunnu’s body was found on the night of the 15th of April, with injury marks around his eyes. According to the details derived from the postmortem report, the boy died because of injury to the eye. The report also identified “neurogenic shock due to sharp injury to brain substance” as the primary cause of death.
One of the accused, Prem Prakash, aged 20, is Chunnu’s cousin and is currently out on bail in relation to a separate murder case. According to the police who are looking into the case, Prem Prakash’s enmity with Chunnu could be the motive behind the murder.
However, Ashutosh Kumar Arya, Chunnu’s father and the Nalanda bureau chief of Dainik Hindustan, is far from being convinced this is the reason for his son being murdered. According to the father, Chunnu was killed because he saw Prem either drinking or sexually harassing a girl. According to him, there is definitely a far more serious reason behind the murder.
While Ashutosh Kumar and his family stay at Harnaut, Chunnu stayed with his grandmother Hasanpur because of his poor health. Speaking about the case, Nalanda Superintendent of Police (SP) Nilesh Kumar said, “Even though the accused would often fight with Chunnu, we are not convinced about why he could have been killed over a trifle. We also rule out any harassment angle…. As Ashutosh had not helped his (Prakash’s) father Gorelal Singh in getting bail, Prakash might have held it against his uncle and killed his son in a matter of revenge. We are still looking into other angles.”
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Rajesh Kumar visited the scene of the crime and asked SP Nilesh Kumar to conduct a thorough investigation of the case and asked for extra security around Ashutosh Kumar Arya’s home. While these three people have been arrested, there is no solid proof regarding the motive yet.
