In Mumbai in the last two weeks five people have died due to the H1N1 influenza virus. The City civic body also reported two people succumbed to leptospirosis.

The civic health officials have raised a concern on the increase in cases of influenza during the monsoon season.

Brihanmumbai Muncipal Corporation (BMC) issued a statement that showed civic hospitals had registered 250 new cases of influenza in the first fortnight of the month.

Since January this year the number to H1N1 cases have gone up to 874. In Mumbai alone, 672 cases have been registered while the other were recorded from outside the metropolis.

A report by a BMC official showed 22 people had died this year due to influenza, 14 from Mumbai. The civic body has developed a plan to prevent and control influenza and other diseases from spreading during the monsoon.

The official was quoted saying, “The fluctuation in temperature and high moisture content in the air are conducive for the spread of H1N1 virus and therefore, people are advised for adequate preventive measures.”

Influenza is Swine flu which is an air borne disease that causes respiratory problems. The symptoms include fever, sore throat, coughing, runny nose, body ache and fatigue.
