On the 7th of December, Telangana State conducted its Legislative Assembly elections. The four major parties which competed in the elections were the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS,) the Indian National Congress (INC,) the Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP.)
Prior to the election date, four opposition parties the INC, the TJS, the TDP and the CPI pledged an alliance, the ‘Prajakutami’ (People’s Alliance,) against the TRS. The Grand Alliance came as a surprise to the people of Telangana as the two biggest rivals, the TDP and the INC, came together with an objective to defeat the TRS. Despite the efforts, the Grand Alliance was unable to achieve the purpose of its formation.
The majority seats required to secure power in the Telangana Legislative Assembly is 60. On the 11th of December, the election results rolled out and the TRS successfully managed to acquire 87 seats, enabling K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) to regain control over the State for the second time. The members of the Grand Alliance collectively secured a total of 22 seats (INC: 19 seats, TDP: 2 seats and BJP: 1 seat.)
The TRS chief, K. Chandrashekar Rao, came out victorious in the Gajwel constituency, defeating Vanteru Pratap Reddy of the Congress party.
K.T. Rama Rao, Telangana IT Minister and AIMIM’s Akbaruddin Owaisi secured seats in the Chandrayangutta and Sircilla constituencies, respectively. Meanwhile, TRS candidate Talasani Srinivas Yadav won in the Sanath Nagar constituency by a margin of 30,217 votes.
The TRS workers commemorated KCR’s victory with a 90 Kg gigantic cake. The TDP Chief N. Chandrababu Naidu and the Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh took to Twitter to congratulate the TRS and Mr. Rao.
