On Thursday, the Telangana police filed a case against the parents who allegedly planned on selling their baby boy to another couple.

About seven months ago, B. Jaiappa and B. Lalamma living in Karankota of the Vikarabad district in Telangana, sold their one and a half month old baby to a couple. The couple who bought they baby were identified as Vijaya and Bhoopathi from Tandur town.

The NGO Childline alerted the police about the crime and further investigation showed that two people, Anjarmma and Dattapa were the agents who helped the couple sell their baby in Tandur for Rs. 8,000.

The police also reported the parents prepared a legal adoption deed with a lawyer and then collected the money from the other couple.

A case has been registered under the Juvenile Justice Act and sections of the IPC. The baby boy was rescued and has been sent to a state run shelter.

This case wasn’t the first to come to light, in March last year a couple sold their newborn baby girl at a private nursing home in Ibrahimpatnam town for Rs. 50,000. The girl was rescued by the police after they were tipped off about the illegal sale.

This case was even more shocking when the police found that the couple wanted to get rid of their third baby and gave the doctor a commission to arrange for a buyer.

Another case was when a mother sold her two month old boy for Rs. 10,000 in Secunderabad in April this year.

Balala Hakkula Sangam was quoted saying,”Incidents of infanticide have become very common in the State and 11 such cases of throwing infants in sewers, bushes, and tanks have taken place in and around Hyderabad over the past three months.”
