On Thursday, the Income Tax (IT) investigating officers raided the Jaya TV Headquarters in Chennai. The IT Department carried out the raid over suspected tax evasion. The Department is on an operation to eradicate black money called, ‘Operation Clean Money.’ The Tamil television channel reports only the news which favors the AIADMK leaders V.K. Sasikala and T.T.V. Dhinakaran.

On Thursday morning, the officials raided the premises of Jaya TV and conducted a thorough search. The officials are investigating allegations of large investments from shell companies shortly after Demonetization indicating suspicious activities. Jaya TV was started by the late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in 1999. The channel is widely known as AIADMK’s mouthpiece. The IT officials not only raided the headquarters but also 187 properties belonging to V.K. Sasikala and her relatives, including her nephew Dhinakaran.

The lawyer defending Jaya TV, C. Rajashekharan claims political vendetta as the reason for the raids. He was quoted saying, “I don’t want to cast aspersions. The IT Department has all the right to conduct raids. But why conduct raids on one particular faction of the AIADMK? The raids should be conducted in an unbiased manner.”

The Department sent out 10 groups of IT officials for a search exercise in Tamil Nadu, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi and other places. At 6 A.M., the officials raided Sasikala’s husband, M. Natarajan’s residence. The search is still ongoing and further updates are awaited.
