UIDAI Reports 200 Official Websites Leaked Aadhaar Information

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) reported more than 200 Central and State Government websites shared the information of some Aadhaar beneficiaries. In response to the RTI query, the UIDAI said it took note of the leak and removed all the data from the websites.

The report from the Aadhaar issuing body did not mention when the breach took place. It confirmed the UIDAI was not responsible for the public display of the Aadhaar details.

It stated, “However, it was found that approximately 210 websites of Central Government and State Government Departments, including Educational Institutes, were displaying the list of beneficiaries along with their name, address, other details and Aadhaar numbers for information of general public.”

The UIDAI is responsible for issuing the 12 digit unique identification number. The Central Government at present is working towards making the Aadhaar card compulsory for Social Welfare Schemes.

RTI responded, “UIDAI has a well designed, multi layer approach robust security system in place and the same is being constantly upgraded to maintain highest level of data security and integrity.”

The UIDAI added, “Various policies and procedures have been defined, these are reviewed and updated continually thereby appropriately controlling and monitoring any movement of people, material and data in and out of UIDAI premises, particularly the data centers.”

The authority also assured security audits on a regular basis are being conducted. It will also take the necessary steps to ensure the data is safer.
