Uttar Pradesh – Akhilesh And Mayawati To Contest Bypolls Separately

Mayawati Das, the President of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Akhilesh Yadav, the President of the Samajwadi Party (SP,) announced to contest the bypolls in Uttar Pradesh (UP) separately.

While Mayawati said, the decision regarding the SP-BSP alliance is not permanent, Akhilesh said he will think about it after the bypolls.

The BSP and the SP formed an alliance ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, which were held from the 11th of April and continued till the 19th of May.

The BSP and the SP joined hands to contest against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha elections.

Uttar Pradesh contested a total of 80 seats in the Lok Sabha elections over 7 phases and the results were announced on the 23rd of May.

The BSP-SP alliance secured only 14 seats, whereas the BJP won a total of 60 seats.

Uttar Pradesh has the majority of Lok Sabha seats, out of which, more than half were bagged by the BJP alone.

Speaking about the analysis of the Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha elections, Mayawati said, “In the results of Lok Sabha elections in UP, base vote of SP, the ‘Yadav’ community, didn’t support the party. Even strong contenders of SP were defeated.”

When asked about the possibility of an alliance between the BSP and the SP in the future, Ms. Das said, it depends on the results of the bypolls.

Putting a halt to all the rumours about there being bad blood between her and Akhilesh, Ms. Das said, the relation between the two of them and Akhilesh’s wife, Dimple Yadav, is not limited to politics and “will continue forever.”

Though it is not clear whether there will be an alliance between the SP and the BSP again, it is final both the parties will contest the bypolls as individual parties.

Stay tuned for further updates.
