Veter Playwright-Actor Girish Karnad Passes Away

Girish Karnad, a veteran playwright, actor and filmmaker, passed away on the 10th of June around 6:30 A.M., in Bengaluru.

Mr. Girish, 81 years old, was suffering from health issues for a long time and on the 10th of June, around 6:30 A.M., he took his last breath at a hospital in Bengaluru.

The demise of Mr. Karnad was confirmed by his family members. Mr. Karnad contributed as an actor, writer and director and worked in more than 200 plays and several movies in Kannada and Hindi.

Girish Karnad was an iconic personality in the creative industry of theatre and cinema as well as a social activist. He was awarded the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan in 1974 and 1992 respectively. He was also the recipient of the Jnanpith Award in 1998 for his contribution to literature.

Some of the prominent and critically acclaimed plays of Mr. Karnad in Kannada were Yayati, Nagamandala, Hayavadana and Tughlaq.

The famous Hindi movies in which he acted were Nishant (1975,) Iqbal (2005,) Dor (2006,) Ek Tha Tiger (2012) and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017.)

According to Girish Karnad’s family, his last rites will be performed at Kalpalli crematorium, Bengaluru, on the 10th of June.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sushma Swaraj and many other political leaders and Bollywood actors took to Twitter and mourned Girish Karnad’s demise and conveyed their condolences to his family.
