The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) today, filed a petition in the Supreme Court (SC) against the order of the Calcutta High Court (HC) regarding the rath yatras to be conducted by the Party in West Bengal.

The Calcutta HC, on Friday, cancelled its order which gave the BJP the permission to conduct its rath yatras in West Bengal.

The BJP, on the 4th of December, sought permission to conduct rath yatras, named ‘Save Democracy,’ in West Bengal.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, on the 15th of December, denied the permission for the rath yatra. The reason cited for the denial were intelligence reports which stated, the BJP will disturb the communal harmony of the State during the yatras.

On Thursday, a single judge bench of the Calcutta High Court, comprising of Tapabrata Chakraborty, approved the month long yatra and ordered the State Government and the BJP to take care of law and order and maintain harmony during the rallies.

However, the judgment of the HC was soon cancelled on Friday, after the State Government raised a request to Debasis Kargupta, the Chief Justice of HC, who then directed the single judge bench of the HC to review the case again.

The BJP then went on to file a petition in the SC against the verdict of the Calcutta HC and asked for a hearing. The SC is currently scrutinising the petition.

Stay tuned for further updates about the story.
