The Central Government is all set to export 51 lakh doses of vaccines against the Wuhan virus (Novel Coronavirus) to states and union territories (UTs.)

According to the Central Government data, more than 1.84 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses are still available with states and UTs.  In addition to the 1.84 crore doses, 51 lakhs would be sent in the next three days.  The confirmation regarding the export of vaccination was given by the Union Health Ministry on the evening of the 16th of May.

The Union Health Ministry said, “More than 1.84 crore Covid vaccine doses (1,84,41,478) are still available with the states and UTs to be administered.  States with negative balance are showing more consumption (including wastage) than vaccine supplied as they have not reconciled the vaccine they have supplied to Armed Forces.”

According to data, Delhi would receive 1,73,760 vaccine doses in the coming days.  Mumbai would get 14,81,501 vaccines, Uttar Pradesh 6,00,000, Madhya Pradesh (5,26,330,) Kolkata (5,00,000) and Chhattisgarh (4,22,300.)

Since the 16th of January, the beginning of the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive, the Government of India (GoI) exported 20,28,09,250 doses of two India made vaccines to all states and UTs.  Maharashtra has received and consumed the highest number of  vaccines in the country, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.

The Serum Institute of India (SII) manufactured Covisheild and the Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech International Private Limited manufactured COVAXIN was provided free of cost.

However, during the third phase of the vaccination drive, the GoI allowed direct purchase of vaccines from manufacturers.   With this, the Central Government would only be responsible for providing free of cost vaccines to states/UTs for people above 45 years.  Vaccines for age groups between 18 to 44, would be the responsibility of the respective state/UT governments.  The decision not only reduced the burden of the Central Government for 18 to 44 years old people, but also the expenses on vaccination which was given free of cost to state/UT governments.

Now, state/UT governments need to purchase vaccinations from the manufacturers, the SII and Bharat Biotech.  While Covisheild is available at a cost of Rs. 300, COVAXIN is available for Rs. 400 to states/UTs.

Meanwhile, so far 18,22,20,164 people have been given doses against the Wuhan virus.
