Concerned about the lack of oxygen at hospitals and the increasing number of stealing of oxygen cylinders, the Delhi High Court (HC) took a crucial decision.

On the 24th of April, the Delhi High Court (HC) said that if any official at the Central, State or local administration would be obstructed in the picking up or supply of oxygen, then it would “hang” that person. The statement was made by the Delhi HC bench of Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Rekha Palli during a hearing.

The Delhi-based Maharaja Agrasen Hospital filed a petition over the shortage of oxygen for seriously ill COVID-19 patients. During the hearing, the HC told the Delhi Government to give it one instance of who was obstructing the oxygen supply. The HC bench said, “We will not spare anyone.”

The court also asked the State Government to inform about such officials of the local administration so that it could take action against them. The Court also asked the Central Government regarding the promised 480 metric tonnes (MT) of oxygen per day allocated for Delhi. The court said, “You (Centre) had assured us (on April 21) that 480 MT per day will reach Delhi. Tell us when will it come? The 480 MT per day is still to see the light of the day.”

As of now, Delhi Government said, they are getting only 380 MT oxygen per day over the past few days and it received only around 300 MT on the 23rd of April.

The lack of oxygen in the Union Territory came at a time when Delhi is witnessing a massive number of single-day COVID-19 cases. Recently, due to the rising number of cases, Delhi surpassed Mumbai and became the worst COVID-19 hit region of IndiaPeople are dying due to the low oxygen even when they could be saved. The Delhi Court called the situation to be a Tsunami and sought an explanation from the Delhi Government and the Central Government regarding the current COVID-19 situation and oxygen supply.

In addition, the Delhi High Court also asked the Central Government and the Delhi Government led by Arvind Kejriwal, to submit a detailed report of the supply of oxygen for patients. The report was asked to be submitted by the 26th of April, the next scheduled hearing regarding the same.
