Mohit D. Ram, a lawyer representing the Election Commission of India (ECI) before the Supreme Court (SC) has resigned.

According to sources, advocate Mohit D. Ram resigned on moral grounds saying his values were not in consonance with the present functioning of the poll body.

The advocate in his resignation letter wrote, “I have found that my values are not in consonance with the current functioning of the EC; and hence I withdraw myself from the responsibilities of its panel counsel before the Supreme Court.”  He further added, “I undertake to ensure smooth transition of files, NOC and ‘vakalatnama’ in all pending matters with my office.”

The resignation of Mr. Mohit D. Ram came days after the ECI moved the SC against the ‘murder’ remark of the Madras High Court.

Speaking about the step of advocate Mohit D. Ram, the ECI officials said, Mr. Mohit D. Ram has not been given any case since 2019. In addition, from now, he would be disengaged with regard to any matter pending with him.

On the other hand, Mohit D. Ram refused to comment about the matter and said, he has nothing to say and everything has been mentioned in his resignation letter.   Advocate Mohit D. Ram was a panel counsel for the ECI in the Supreme Court since 2013.

It is to be noted, the resignation of Mr. Mohit D. Ram came at a time when the ECI is receiving criticism from people, media and state High Courts.   The Election Body of India has also been blamed for the spread of the Novel Coronavirus by conducting Assembly elections and allowing road shows and public rallies.
