India COVID-19 Cases Continue To Rise, Records 62k Fresh Cases In 24 Hours

For the 8th consecutive day, the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 cases in India crossed 40,000.

In the last 24 hours, India recorded 62,258 fresh cases.  In addition to the new cases, the nation reported 291 fatalities and 30,386 recoveries. 

With this, India’s COVID-19 tally stands at 1,19,08,910.  Of these, 1,12,95,023 are recovered/discharged cases, 4,52,647 are active cases and 1,61,240 people died. The data was released by the Union Health Ministry. The updated data regarding the same is available on the official website of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW.) 

In addition, the Government of India (GoI) also allowed citizens above 45 years of age to take two India made COVID-19 vaccines.   The announced development in the ongoing vaccination drive would be in effect from the 1st of April. 

Meanwhile, states like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Punjab are contributing to the majority of COVID1-9 cases.   Maharashtra alone logged 36,902 new cases, the highest single day increase ever in 2021.

In order to control the spread of COVID-19, the Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced a night curfew in the State.  The curfew would be in effect from the 28th of March. 

The GoI also directed all states and Union territories (UTs) to regulate crowds and ensure strict enforcement of protocols ahead of various festivals.

Meanwhile, The country has so far administered 5,81,09,773 COVID-19 vaccine shots. 

The countrywide vaccination drive was rolled out on the 16th of January with healthcare workers getting inoculated and vaccination of the frontline workers started from the 2nd of February.
