A day after reporting below 3.60 lakh cases of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19,) India once again recorded a rise in cases.

In the past 24 hours, the Nation reported close to 3.83 lakh cases. On the morning of the 5th of May, the Union Health Ministry confirmed 3,82,315 new cases, 3,780 fatalities and 3,38,489 recoveries from COVID-19 disease. The updated figure is available on the official website of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW.)

With this, India’s coronavirus caseload topped the 20.3 million or 2.03 crores mark. In addition, there is no stable situation in the health system as it continues to crumble under the weight of new cases.

Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had to suspend the Indian Premier League (IPL) 14th edition due to the COVID-19 surge.

According to several media houses, the number of cases reported has declined from the recent 4.02 lakh mark. However, many claim the low testing and hiding accurate numbers possibly is the reason behind a downfall of COVID-19 cases. So far, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) conducted a total of 29,48,52,078 sample tests for COVID-19 including 15,41,299 tested in the past 24 hours.

With this, India has 2,06,65,148 positive cases, of which 34,87,229 are active cases, 1,69,51,731 are recovered/discharged cases and 2,26,188 deceased cases.

Of all Indian states, Maharashtra and Karnataka reported the highest, 51,880 cases and 44,631 new COVID-19 cases, respectively.

In addition, over 16.04 crore vaccine doses have been administered since India’s inoculation drive began on the 16th of January.

On the other hand, to contain the spread of the virus, many states imposed night curfews, lockdowns and others extended the duration of the already imposed restrictions. Adding to this, many countries have rushed in medical supplies to augment India’s efforts in controlling the surge and fighting the second wave of the pandemic. The updates about the lack of oxygen and people dying due to the mismanagement of healthcare facilities and infrastructure is still the same. States are falling short on vaccination, halting the ongoing vaccination drive for people between 18 year to 44 years old.

India is currently the second worst hit nation from COVID-19, first is the United States of America.
