According to reports the wreckage, of the missing Indian Air Force fighter jet Sukhoi 30, was found close to the last known location. The pilots have been reported missing and debris was found near the China border in a dense forest area.

The IAF in an official statement said, “Wreckage found. Close to the last known position of the aircraft. As of now, the weather is bad and the place has dense foliage. The further update follows.” The jet had gone missing after taking off from Tezpur Salonibari Air Force station in Assam.

The jet was on a routine training sortie when it went off radar and radio contact, near the Chinese border after an hour of takeoff. A massive search operation was launched with a SU 30 fighter jet, C 130 aircraft with electro-optical payload and ALH helicopters were put into service. Apart from these, more personnel were deployed in four ground parties. This includes nine teams of Indian Army and two teams of state administration.

Since its induction, the IAF has lost seven Sukhoi 30 MKs of 240 present. This is the second Sukhoi 30 of Tezpur that has crashed in the last two years. In 2015, a Sukhoi 30 had crashed near the Laokhowa wildlife sanctuary in Nagaon of the same base.
