Everyone has excitedly awaited the day to light some divas and cause some air and sound pollution on the festival of lights. But just a friendly reminder, Diwali has always been the festival of lights and noise never had anything to do with it, so why do we burn firecrackers?
Let’s go back in time when the Chinese invented firecrackers, that’s right the Chinese, not the Indians. So, point number one firecrackers were never made for the sole purpose of Diwali. But instead, the Chinese believed it could ward away evil spirits.

It was the 7th century when the Chinese decided that firecrackers would be a good invention to eventually kick start climate change. Firecrackers slowly became famous and traveled to India. The Mughals used it as entertainment for their royal families. But then somewhere down the line, it ended up becoming a part of the festival of lights.

Burning crackers is a momentary joy for a few people that cause massive repercussions in the future. In 2016, Delhi was filled with a smog for days after Diwali, causing respiratory problems to a number of people. If you were upset about water not being free, at this rate we should be ready to breathe out of a can in the future. But apart from adding to the pollution in the air, firecrackers can cause discomfort to many.

We all live among old people and young people but have we ever stopped to think how they felt while firecrackers are being burnt nonstop. Old people and infant children are in a fragile stage of their lives and loud noises can startle them out of their skin, which I hear is very uncomfortable. It’s not just the old and the young but also certain people suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and loud noises are their worst nightmare.

If human discomfort doesn’t put you off how about animals, they have no clue what Diwali is or what firecrackers are. The sudden noises confuse them and scare them. People have had to send their pets away to quieter areas to ensure they don’t have a stressful night.

At present, we are facing a climate change problem and yes, firecrackers are not the only contributor to climate change but it is the most useless. Burning coal and engine fuels are a necessity for our daily lives but firecrackers do nothing but give a temporary satisfaction to people.

This Diwali, take a stand for a peaceful festival and avoid ignorant celebrities like Chetan Bhagat who thinks he can compare firecrackers to goat sacrifices.

Instead, take a lesson from Yuvraj Singh, Kalki Koechlin, Shraddha Kapoor and Richa Chadha who have decided to celebrate the true festival of lights and not noise.
