On Friday, the Madras High Court dismissed a plea to ban the Tamil film Mersal. The court clearly stated we live in a country that allows freedom of expression. It also emphasized Mersal was just a film and not reality to offend anyone.
The movie has been receiving continuous criticism from a number of BJP politicians for mocking the GST and Digital India in the film.
Madras High Court gave its verdict a day after Mersal Actor Vijay thanked his supporters and fans for defending the film. He was quoted as saying, “My colleagues in the film industry, actors, directors, producers, organizations representing actors, directors, some of the renowned national leaders, media houses and my friends have given (them) a befitting reply. I thank all of them who supported Mersal.”
Although, freedom of expression is part of our constitution, producer of Mersal Hema Rukmani felt the need to issue an apology. She said, “If the movie has hurt the feelings of anyone, I consider it my personal heartache and apologize. We are willing to remove scenes or messages that may be seen as misleading or which might create misunderstanding.”
