661 Fishermen Still Missing After Cyclone Ockhi Rampage

A few weeks ago, the Cyclone Ockhi went on a rampage along the coast of South India causing many fishermen to go missing and claiming the lives of many. The Defence Forces and other agencies are involved in the ongoing rescue operations.

Today, the Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told the Lok Sabha they managed to save 845 lives, sadly 661 fishermen are still missing.

Nirmala Sitharaman, in a written response, said the Navy, Air Force and the Coast Guard saved 821 people before the 20th of December. Other Agencies including Merchant Navy Vessels saved another 24 lives.

From the total of 845 people rescued 453 are from Tamil Nadu, 362 people from Kerala and 30 from Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands. Unfortunately 661 fishermen are yet to be found.

It is said the majority of the missing people are from Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The number of missing people from these States are 400 and 261 respectively. Tamil Nadu and Kerala are the States that suffered the most during Cyclone Ockhi’s rampage.
