Board of Control for Cricket in India,Subramanian Swamy,BCCI receives Notice From SC ,Justice Dipak Misra,Subramanian Swamy plea, Indian Premier League

On Friday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI,) was issued a notice from the Supreme Court. The notice was to BJP leader, Subramanian Swamy’s plea to seek an e auction of the media rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) to have better transparency and clarity.

Within two weeks of time, a bench headed by the Justice Dipak Misra sought a response from BCCI and posted the matter for August 24.

On August 17, the auction process for IPL media rights was scheduled to start. For 5 years, the rights would be in force. Subramanian Swamy said the apex court had previously held that e auction is the best method for awarding the contracts.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said the issue should not be decided in a nontransparent manner since an amount of Rs. 30,000 crores is involved in the award of IPL media rights.

“There is a requirement of the nondiscriminatory and transparent method, (in line) with the best international practices, to be adopted for the distribution of the valuable media rights so as to ensure a maximum revenue in the larger national interest,” he stated.

“The commercial interests and huge money is involved, amounting to Rs. 25,000 crores to Rs. 30,000 crores, in the valuable rights associated with the game of cricket in India, which makes it mandatory to have a robust, completely transparent auction method to maximize revenue and prevent vested interest from making undue gains,” Swamy added.
