Human Chain Formed at Parade Ground: Saturday was the day locals in Hyderabad took a stance against the building of a new secretariat at the Parade Grounds. A number of people depend on the Parade Grounds for their outdoor activities. The ground fills up with thousands of people every morning and evening. The crowds are larger over the weekends.

The Telangana Rashtra Samiti has made the decision to construct a new secretariat at Parade Grounds. The reason for the building is the ‘vastu dosh’ in the old building.

Mohammed Jameel, a regular walker at Parade Grounds said, “Looks like the KCR government is following vastu rules by building a new secretariat. The civil society should take this matter to the High Court.”

All the regular visitors to Parade Grounds started a protest, ‘Save Parade Ground’ on Friday where they made all the people supporting to sign a petition. On Saturday, their second day of the protest, over a thousand people gathered at the ground. They formed a human chain connecting the entire 12 acre ground.

We have three decade old attachment with Parade Ground and my entire family comes here for a morning walk. We fought with the Army when restrictions were imposed in 2014 on walkers at the ground and we won when the authorities relented and allowed us to utilize the place for morning exercises,” a resident of R P Road, K. Venkat Ramana explained.

Krishank, social activist and politician said, “This government has no knowledge about the historical relevance. On one hand, they are planning to demolish the Nizam era structures at the current secretariat, while on the other hand, they are planning to occupy the land which had significance during the British era. While the entire Hyderabad province, which was under Nizam rule, merged into the Indian Union after ‘operation Polo’ on September 17, 1948, Secunderabad Cantonment celebrated independence on 15 August 1947 at this very Parade Ground.”

A regular walker, Mr. S.S. Shetty raised his concern about taking Parade Ground away from the locals, “Already the city’s open space is shrinking, thanks to land sharks. This move will strip Hyderabad off the last of its open space. There is sufficient space in the present Secretariat since offices belonging to Andhra Pradesh administration have shifted. Why does the Government not make use of it, rather than building a new secretariat?”

If you make a visit to Parade Grounds early in the morning, you’ll see walkers and joggers who like keeping fit. In the evening, the ground is split with a group of cricketers practicing on one end, children skating in another part of it, and another group of children playing football. The ground hosts thousands of people in a day and serves as an open space for children to run around and be children. Building the secretariat at Parade Grounds would be saddening for these thousands people who won’t have a place to let their children play.

Spread the word and save the Parade Grounds.
