The Indian National Congress (INC,) on the 2nd of July, demanded the status of Leader of Opposition, during the Lok Sabha session.

Kodikunnil Suresh, the INC Chief Whip of the Lok Sabha, said, the Indian National Congress is technically eligible to become the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Suresh said, although the INC did not demand the opposition status, it is eligible for the post as it is the second largest Party in the Lok Sabha with 52 Members of Parliament (MPs.)

According to the Opposition, as per the Parliament Act of 1977, the Leader of the Opposition status should be given to the party which crosses 1/10th of the total seats in the Lok Sabha. There are a total of 542 seats in the Lok Sabha, so to gain the Opposition status, a party should have 55 seats in the house.

To justify his demand, Mr. Suresh said, the INC is eligible as it is the leader of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA,) which has a total of 92 seats in the Parliament, which is more than 54 seats.

Mr. Suresh said, “If the PM (Prime Minister) is indeed sincere about what he said on the importance of the opposition, he should give the leader of Opposition post to the INC and the Deputy Speaker’s post to another opposition party.”

Kodikunnil Suresh presented his arguments regarding the Opposition status during the session of the 17th Lok Sabha, which started from the 17th of June and will continue till the 26th of July.

Stay tuned for further updates.
