On the 15th of April, India’s 15 man squad for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup in England and Wales was announced at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters in Mumbai.

Making the announcement, M.S.K. Prasad, the Chairman of selectors, said, while players like Dinesh Karthik, K.L. Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja found a place in the Team, Ambati Rayudu and Rishabh Pant were excluded.

According to Mr. Prasad, Karthik was preferred over Pant because his skills are far more superior when it comes to playing behind the stumps.

While making the announcement regarding the squad, Prasad said, “In the last one year or so, these two wrist spinners have done well. Wickets might be a bit more dry. Jadeja might come in handy. After the Champions Trophy, we have tried a few middle order options. We gave a few more chances to Rayudu but what Vijay Shankar offers is 3 dimensional. If the conditions are overcast, he might bowl a bit and he is a fantastic fielder. He is a batsman who can bowl. In the team, we have the luxury of 7 bowlers. We have covered all the bases and this is one of the most balanced Indian sides for the World Cup.”

The preparations for the World Cup started soon after the ICC Champions Trophy got done in England over two years ago. When India lost the Trophy to Pakistan then, the decision was made to cut some key players and replace them with fresh new faces.

For the last few major matches, India has been relying on the performance of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. However, Shikhar Dhawan’s recent poor performance was a cause for concern. Looks like Team India is placing all its hopes on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as the Captain and Vice Captain.

The World Cup matches for India start with a match against South Africa on the 5th of June, Australia on the 9th of June, New Zealand on the 13th of June and then a grand match against Pakistan on the 16th of June. The Cup then moves forward to a game between India and Afghanistan on the 22nd of June.
