The Supreme court kept their word and sentenced the four convicts to death, who were involved in the brutal rape and murder of Nirbhaya in 2012.

Nirbhaya’s parents appreciated the judiciary for upholding their word, “It took time, but justice was served; now we have no complaints,” said Badri Singh, Nirbhaya’s father. He also added, “It’s a victory for my family, I am very happy with the judgment.”

Nirbhaya’s mother felt the same, “My daughter has got justice, I thank the judiciary.”

Before the verdict was read, Badri Singh voiced that he was confident that they would get the punishment they deserved. He said,“Leave the Supreme court, even God will not forgive such people. They will be awarded death sentence.”

In one of the most gruesome gang rape cases in 2012, the court said that it was a rare gang rape case and the justice system would be compelled to give the most severe punishment to ensure justice.

In December 2012, 23 year old Nirbhaya and her friend were subjected to a violent and horrific night that led to the death of Nirbhaya. After nearly four years the judicial system finally came to a conclusion and the death penalty was given to the four convicts.

The judge while pronouncing the verdict said, “The accused were obsessed about ravishing her life, she was treated as an object of enjoyment.” In a 429 page order, the judge showed no mercy towards the accused even after the defendant asked to reconsider a punishment as the accused were young and came from a poor background.

The accused have another chance to appeal against the Supreme Court ruling and a presidential pardon. The unrest that this horrible incident caused around the world, the accused have a slim chance of escaping the death penalty.
