The Indian National Congress (INC,) on the 12th of April, confirmed its stand regarding the question of its grand alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the Lok Sabha elections.

P.C. Chacko, the Delhi in charge of the INC, said, the INC is ready to form an alliance with the AAP if the latter agrees to restrict the alliance only to the Delhi Lok Sabha elections.

Mr. Chacko addressed the media and said, as of now, the Party is contesting the Delhi Lok Sabha elections alone, as the AAP is stick to its demand of seat sharing.

Mr. Chacko said, “We are compelled to contest the elections in Delhi on our own. The AAP wanted to extend the alliance to other states and that was not practical. Every state is different. If they are ready for an alliance in Delhi, we were and we are still ready.”

According to sources, the AAP is demanding a seat sharing formula in all the other states of India for the Lok Sabha elections.

Gopal Rai, the Convenor of the AAP in Delhi, said, “Congress should have thought of cooperating in 33 seats across four states (Goa, Punjab, Delhi and Haryana), instead of getting stuck on their demand for three seats in Delhi.”

Chacko said, if the AAP is okay with the settlement, then the INC does not have an issue forming an alliance, or else, the INC would release the candidates’ list in Delhi soon.

Mr. Chacko also said, the INC finalised 4 candidates to fight the Delhi Lok Sabha elections, whereas 3 names are yet to be finalised.

Delhi will contest a total of 7 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled on the 12th of May 2019.

The major parties contesting the Delhi Lok Sabha elections are the INC, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the AAP.

The results of the Delhi Lok Sabha elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.
