The Returning Officer (RO) of Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Budh Nagar constituency, on the 26th of March, rejected the nomination papers of Shweta Sharma, a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP.)

Shweta Sharma submitted her nomination papers to Brajesh Narain Singh, the RO of Gautam Budh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. However, the papers were rejected as she failed to find 10 mandatory proposers for the nomination process.

According to the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) guidelines, 10 mandatory proposers are required for candidates who are not from any recognised national or regional party in any state.

Though Shweta Sharma claimed she was a member of the AAP, the RO rejected her nomination, as the AAP is not a recognised Party in Uttar Pradesh.

Mr. Singh said, “The nomination process was allowed till 3 pm of the 25th of March. Today the nominations were scrutinised and the candidate was told to bring any document, a court order or directive, to substantiate her claim, but she came up with none and had only one proposer. The decision (to reject her nomination) was taken on this basis.”

The recognition of the AAP is only limited to Delhi, as the AAP is a regional Party of Delhi, led by Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi.

After the rejection of Shweta Sharma’s nomination, the AAP will contest only two seats in Uttar Pradesh, which are Aligarh and Saharanpur.

Uttar Pradesh will contest a total of 80 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, which are divided into 7 phases.

The Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha elections are scheduled to be held on the 11th of April, 18th of April, 23rd of April, 29th of April, 6th of May, 12th of May and 19th of May.

The major parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh are the Indian National Congress (INC,) the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the grand alliance of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP.)

The results of the Lok Sabha elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.
