Late night on the 18th of April, Tripura Congress President Pradyot Kishore Debburman was booked by the police for slapping a person in custody at a police station in the Khowai district.

Pradyot Debburman, allegedly slapped Mintu Debbarma, a man who was a supporter of the rival party, Indigenious People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT.) The suspect was in custody because of an attempt made on the convoy of Pradyot’s sister and the Lok Sabha candidate from the party, Pragya Debburman.

Pradyot Debburman was issued a notice after a video showing the incident was used as evidence. Partha Chakraborty, the officer in charge of the Khowai Police Station, said, a notice  would be sent to Pradyot during the next two to three days. Once the notice has been issued, Pradyot will be asked to come in for interrogation.

Reacting to the case filed against him, Pradyot said, the man he slapped had a horrible plan of maiming and severely injuring his sister. When the said incident occurred, Pragya was on her way back from a campaign in Tulasikhar, about 70 km away from Khowai.

As of now, the Tripura Police have registered a case against Prabyot and booked him under Sections 447, 352, 323 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC.)  Pradyot said he was perfectly fine with going to jail for slapping Mintu and said if it came down to it, he wouldn’t seek bail.

Pragya is currently contesting the ongoing Lok Sabha elections from the East Tripura (Scheduled Tribe Reserved) constituency and is fighting against sitting Member of Parliament (MP) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] leader, Jitendra Choudhary.

The polling for this region will happen on the 23rd of April.

The results of the Lok Sabha elections will be declared on the 23rd of May.

Stay tuned for more updates.
