Udit Raj, the Member of Parliament (MP) of the Bharatiya Janata Party from the North West Delhi, on the 23rd of April, announced, he will quit the Party as he was not given a ticket to contest the Lok Sabha elections.

Udit Raj, who wished to contest the Lok Sabha elections from the North West Delhi constituency, earlier said, “I am waiting for a ticket if not given to me I will do goodbye to the party. I still hopeful that I will file nomination from my constituency and BJP where I have worked hard and proved my metal. I hope I will not be forced to leave BJP by BJP itself (sic.)”

His tweets came after he raised slogans outside the BJP office in Delhi. Mr. Raj addressed the media and said, “I am not leaving the Party, the Party seems to have left me.”

Speaking about a warning from the opposition parties in Delhi, Mr. Raj said, Rahul Gandhi, the President of the Indian National Congress (INC) and Arvind Kejriwal, the President of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP,) warned him about the BJP. Both the opposition leaders said, the BJP will not give a ticket to Raj and it is better for him to leave the Party.

Mr. Raj also spoke about his efforts to connect with the Party leaders to ask them about the seat. He said, “Amit Shah ji, I have been trying to talk to you many times. I have sent an SMS to you. I also tried to speak to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Manoj Tiwari is saying that I will get the ticket. I tried to speak to Nirmala Sitharaman as well. I have requested Arun Jaitely.”

Udit Raj, who is a Dalit leader, left the Party during the ongoing elections, which could be a major drawback for the BJP in Delhi. The Party may lose support from the Dalit communities and the people in the Capital of India. Mr. Raj said, he thought the BJP supports Dalits and wants a Dalit leader, but the Party needs a ‘deaf and mute’ Dalit, not a leader.

With these tweets by Mr. Raj, it is likely he will contest as an independent candidate.

Mr. Raj is expected to file his nomination as an independent candidate from the North West Delhi to contest the Delhi Lok Sabha elections.

Delhi will contest a total of 7 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, scheduled on the 12th of May 2019.

The major parties contesting the Delhi Lok Sabha elections are the INC, the AAP and the BJP.

The results of the Delhi Lok Sabha elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.
