Looking at how Indonesia and Bangladesh banned Tik Tok, a mobile music app, the Madras High Court, on the 3rd of April, asked the Union Government to ban the app in India as well.

The bench, consisting of Justice N. Kirubakaran and Justice S.S. Sundar, also asked not to let the videos made using this app be shared on social media platforms. With this regard, the High Court issued an interim order stating, “It is said that Tik Tok App., is mostly played by the teenagers and young people and it has proven to be an addictive one. By becoming addicted to Tik Tok App., and similar Apps., or cyber games, the future of the youngsters and mind set of the children are spoiled (sic.)”

The Madras High Court asked for this ban looking at the kind of pornographic content being promoted on the app. According to the judges who asked for the ban, the Government is responsible for keeping a check on content like this.

The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court  heard this case and after a lengthy deliberation, the Court requested a ban on this app.

Furthermore, looking at how the United States passed a Children Online Privacy Act to help prevent children from becoming victims of cyberbullying, the Madras High Court asked the Union Government to pass a similar act as well.

Originally known as Musical.ly, Tik Tok is an app created by ByteDance, a Chinese internet company. With over 100 million users in India alone, the app is being held responsible for giving children and teenagers a negative outlook on life.

While the Center hasn’t passed a ruling on this directive by the Madras High Court, the judges asked for the decision to be given by the 16th of April.

Stay tuned for more updates.
