On the 30th of April, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) sent a notice to Rahul Gandhi, the President of the Indian National Congress (INC,) seeking an explanation with regard to the details of his citizenship.

The complaint, filed by Subrahmanian Swamy, was based on the discovery of a company registered on Rahul Gandhi’s name in the United Kingdom (U.K.) A company called Backops Limited was registered in the U.K., in the year 2003 and according to the Company’s documents, Gandhi was registered as one of the directors and secretary.

Swamy’s complaint included an annual return filed by the Company for the years of 2005 and 2006. In the document, Gandhi’s birthday was written as the 19th of June 1970. Furthermore, in a letter filed for the dissolution of the Company on the 17th of February 2009, it is seen that Rahul Gandhi is not an Indian national, but a citizen of Britain.

The MHA issued this notice to Rahul Gandhi by responding to serious questions posed by Dr. Swamy, a Bharatiya Janata Party Member of Parliament (MP.)

Apart from the complaint filed by Subrahmanian Swamy, the initial plea was filed on the 20th of April by Dhruv Lal, a resident of Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. While filing an eleven page document, Dhruv cited various discrepancies in the nomination papers submitted by the INC President. The document filed against Rahul Gandhi include questions raised over details about his real name, citizenship and educational qualifications.

The complaint was first filed by Subrahmanian Swamy in 2015 and since then, he has filed complaints against the INC leader multiple times.

The notice by the MHA comes bang in the middle of the seven phase Lok Sabha elections, in which Rahul Gandhi is contesting from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad in Kerala.

Rahul Gandhi has 15 days to respond to the notice issued to him by the MHA.
