Mumbai Rains: Lloyd’s Complex Wall Collapsed

Due to the recent heavy Mumbai rains, a wall of an upscale Mumbai complex collapsed this morning. After incessant rain the wall collapsed burying over 15 parked cars. There are a number of visulas from the 32 storey Lloyds Estate in Antop Hill, Wadala.

The Mumbai Civic Body and firemen were assigned to evacuate an entire wing of the building. This wing was filled with houses of bankers and businessmen. An official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported there were no injuries and all residents were safe.

According to the residents the construction work near the building weakened the boundary wall causing it to collapse due to the rain. A resident at the complex Anila Pillai said, “We had alerted the authorities but no action was taken. The wall collapsed this morning after heavy rain. (sic)”

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 231.4 mm of rain in Mumbai since Sunday. IMD’s Mumbai Director Ajay Kumar told the press this ranking of rain is considered extremely heavy showers.

Mr. Kumar was quoted saying, “This is the first extremely heavy rainfall recorded in Mumbai in the current season. The rain intensity has gone up since yesterday afternoon and is expected to continue further.”

The Mumbai Police’s official Twitter handle posted a comforting message to the locals. It read, “The showers are heavy but so is our ‘bandobast’ on the streets to ‘be there’ for Mumbaikars. We are #AlwaysUpForDuty to help you reach your destination with a little care & caution from you during your journey #RoadSafety #MumbaiRains.”

The police have reported three deaths due to the rains in Mumbai over the last 24 hours. The heavy rains water logged the subways in Andheri, Khar and Malad. On The Eastern Express Highway a container broke down on the bridge causing even more chaotic traffic.
