Mumbai – School Denies Admission To Single Parent Child

St. Lawrence School in Mumbai denied admission to Sujata Mohite’s 7 year old son as he is a single parent child.

Sujata Mohite is a 27 year old single mother, who lives in Nerul with her son. She got separated from her husband 4 years ago and works as a sales manager at a private company.

According to sources, Ms. Mohite was trying to get an admission for her son at St. Lawrence School in Vashi since April 2019.

Whenever she tried to get an admission form, she was denied the same, stating, the school is not accepting any admissions.

After repeated attempts, Ms. Sujata, with the help of her friends, again enquired regarding the admissions. She asked her friends to pose as a couple, following which, the school responded positively and agreed for the admission.

Ms. Sujata said, “I asked my friends to pose as a couple and contact the school. They were told that admissions are open and there is a vacancy. On Thursday, I went to the school along with my friends, where principal Sairy Kanade told me to my face that since I was a single parent, they couldn’t admit my son.”

The issue came to light after Ms. Sujata posted a video on the social media platform. In the video, Sairy Kanade, the Principal of St. Lawrence School, denied admission to Sujata’s son as she is a single parent.

Ms. Kanade said, “We can’t handle single parents’ kids. We ask children to bring both parents. Single parents cause a lot of problems.”

After the video went viral, Ryan International, the parent organisation of St. Lawrence School, assured an admission to Mohite’s son as well as strict action against the Principal of the school.

Ryan International issued a statement which read, “As an educational institution, we do not discriminate in admitting students under any criteria nor do we have any such policy for parents…as the video has just come to our attention, we are investigating… will take appropriate action”

The investigation against St. Lawrence School and Sairy Kanade is still going on.

Stay tuned for further updates.
