Naresh Chandra, the former Indian Ambassador to the U.S., died at the age of 82. Chandra was the Cabinet Secretary from the year 1990 to 1992. He also served as the Indian Ambassador to the U.S., from 1996 to 2001.

The former ambassador died at Manipal Hospital at Dona Paula near Panaji, on Sunday night. The cause of death was the failure of multiple organs.

Head of Clinical Services at Manipal Hospital, Dr. Shekhar Salkar said, “He was admitted to the hospital on Friday evening with complaints of fever and vomiting and loose motions.”

The doctor also informed that Chandra was diabetic and suffered a cardiac arrest.

Dr. Couto a family friend of Chandra since 1974 who visited Goa regularly to spend time with his nieces,  said Chandra would go to Nerul and Parra in North coastal Goa where his nieces lived.

On one of Chandra’s visits, he fell ill and Ms. Couto called Dr. Salkar to inform him about Chandra’s health. She also called and asked North Goa Collector Nila Mohanan for help.

Ms. Couto said, “Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Girish Chandra Saxena who died on April 14 last after a brief illness and Naresh Chandra, were very old friends of ours. Both used to like to come and holiday in Goa.”

Ms. Couto informed Mr. Chandra’s body would be sent by flight to Delhi on Monday by 2 P.M., for the final rights.

Mr. Chandra was the Governor of Gujarat 1995-96 and was given a Padma Vibhushan in 2007
When Chandra was asked to describe his tenure in the Indian government he said, “Living in interesting times is how I would describe my tenure here.”
