On the 29th of April, Ness Wadia was sentenced to two years of imprisonment for the possession of drugs in Japan while holidaying in the Country.

According to reports, the heir to the 283 year old Wadia Group was found to be in possession of 25 grams of cannabis in his pockets while on a skiing trip to Niseko, a town in Hokkaido, Japan, in March this year.

Wadia was briefly taken into custody at the New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido after sniffer dogs smelled the cannabis in his pockets. While being arrested, Wadia admitted to be in possession of the drugs and added, they were for personal use.

Post Wadia’s admission, he was taken into custody on the 20th of March and later on in the month, was presented before Sapporo District Court. During the indictment in March, Wadia was given a two year jail sentence by the Court. Before his hearing, Wadia spent an undisclosed period of time in prison in Japan.

Wadia’s arrest comes just before Japan starts gearing up for the 2020 Olympics it is going to host in Tokyo. With the entire world watching Japan’s every move now, the Country stepped up its stance about drugs and has brought down the hammer on any kind of drug abuse.

Despite giving the businessman a sentence of 2 years, the Court suspended the order for the next five years. Since then, Wadia is living in India.

Ever since this news broke out on Tuesday morning, the share prices of various companies under the Wadia group started plummeting.

So far, the Wadia Group hasn’t made a comment about the situation.
