On the 12th of April, the Supreme Court (SC) agreed to hear a plea challenging the decision of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ban the PM Narendra Modi biopic.

A bench headed by Ranjan Gogoi, the Chief Justice of India, said, the Supreme Court, on the 15th of April, will listen to the plea made by the producers of the biopic.

On the 10th of April, a special poll panel of the ECI took a decision to ban the release of the biopic just before the Lok Sabha elections. According to the poll panel, releasing the biopic during this time could influence the voters.

Despite being certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC,) the ECI asked the producers not to release the biopic, PM Narendra Modi, until further notice.

In its statement while banning the release of PM Narendra Modi, the ECI said, “It is claimed that such creative contents are kind of surrogate publicity by the candidate or the political party during the period of model code. Though the display materials claim to be part of creative content, it is contended that these have propensity and potentiality to affect the level playing field which is not in consonance with the provisions of the model code of conduct.”

This is not the only biopic which received a stay order by the ECI. Previously, the Election Commission also asked the producers of Lakshmi’s NTR and Udyama Simham not to release the films until further notice.

The Supreme Court has now agreed to listen to the plea made by the producers of PM Narendra Modi and will take a call after hearing both the sides.

Stay tuned for more updates.
