The Supreme Court (SC) conducted a hearing today on the petition filed by Alok Verma, the former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director, against the Central Government’s decision of sending him on compulsory leave on the grounds of corruption. The SC ordered the anti corruption body Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to complete the probe against Alok Verma within two weeks.
A bench of three, led by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, gave the 12th of November as the date for the next hearing of the case. The SC added that the interim CBI Director, M. Nageswar Rao, will only be an administrative head and will not hold the right to take any policy decisions. Mr. Rao was asked by the SC to submit a report of the decisions taken by him.
On Tuesday night, the Cabinet Committee sent former CBI Director Alok Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana on leave on account of them being involved in a corruption case. On Thursday, the CBI stated both the officials will retain their posts until the CVC’s probe ends.
Rahul Gandhi, the Congress Party Chief, is in support of Alok Verma and accused the Central Government of violating the laws. Rahul Gandhi, with the support of the Trinamool Congress (TMC,) started a protest from the CBI headquarters in Delhi’s CGO Complex today at 11:00 A.M.
