Telangana: Experts Brought In To Rescue K4 Tigress

Wildlife emergency experts are gearing up to rescue K4 the tigress with a wound refusing to heal. Four wildlife veterinarians experienced with handling wildlife emergencies will come to Telangana to help K4. A group formed with nearly 100 people as support staff will join the rescue operations.

K4 who resides in the Chennur forest area in Telangana has a huge open wound on its abdomen. Last year, K4 got caught in a poacher’s snare that is crushing her near the abdomen.

The National Tiger Conservation Authority met with the committee on Friday in Mancherial. They discussed their strategy to immobilize K4 and precautionary measures during the rescue.

State Forest Departments Special Duty Officer A. Shankaran said, “Once it is immobilized, the plans we discussed included taking X-ray images of the wound, an MRI scan of its abdomen, among other steps, to rule out any permanent injury to K4.”

The doctors believe the tigress will require a week long treatment as her injuries are serious. Shankaran further explained, “We decided that we will place baits and monitor them and also any kills of wild animals K4 may make. It was also decided that no action will be taken for the first couple of kills to allow K4 to trust and return to its kills to feed. Once we are certain that it is doing so, then at the next kill, we will get our team in place on the machans and try to immobilize the tigress.”

After the meeting, Shankaran spoke to the media and said, “The tranquilizer guns are in place. The required drugs are in place. We are also getting about six to eight sets of walkie-talkies for the staff. All the equipment will be ready and available here (Mancherial) in the next three or four days.”

The tiger is considered the national animal of India and the authorities are struggling to save these beautiful creatures from money hungry poachers. India is home to 70% of the world’s tigers and keeping them safe is only fit. Since tigers made the near extinction list, India started a number of programs to rescue tigers and impose fines and punishments on the poachers.
