Third Attack on American Indians: Sikh Shot in U.S.A.

A third attack comes in a series of outrages against Indians that have been going on in the United States of America. A 39 year old Sikh was shot outside his home in Kent, Washington by a partially masked gunman who shouted “go back to your own country.” Although the man, Deep Rai, didn’t sustain serious injuries, the impression of the Indian people on America being the land of dreamers has certainly received a major setback.

According to the Kent police, an argument broke out between Deep and another man who walked up to him while the former was tending his vehicle outside his home on last Friday. The heated argument led to the shooting. The victim described the shooter as a six foot tall white man, wearing a mask covering the lower half of his face.

Kent Police Commander Jarod Kasner said the incident is getting attention from the Sikh community and others. “With recent unrest and concern throughout the nation this can get people emotionally involved, especially when (the crime) is directed at a person for how they live, how they look,” Kasner said. Jasmit Singh, a leader of the Sikh community in Renton, also made a statement when he knew about the shooting. “We’re all kind of at a loss in terms of what’s going on right now, this is just bringing it home. The climate of hate that has been created doesn’t distinguish between anyone,” he said.

Indian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sushma Swaraj tweeted out about this incident showing her concern to the family.

The incident comes after just two of the previous ones where Srinivas Kunchibhotla and Harnish Patel were shot and killed in a supposed hate crime. Is this now going to be a general weather of worry for Indians?
