About five days ago, a 23 year old IT professional was allegedly harassed by her colleague. The victim and accused are employees of Infosys and the accused is on the run. As police sent out a team to catch Charan Chowdary, 24 years old, Infosys also reported that they have begun proceedings against Charan.

The company justified the lack of action these past days on the basis that they weren’t aware of the situation.

Infosys released a statement that read, “Infosys takes every complaint related to violation of the Company’s Code of Conduct seriously. However, as this particular incident was not reported to us earlier, we have only just started our process. We are now investigating the matter and are working closely with the police to aid their investigation.”

According to reports, the victim was being harassed by Charan for as long as seven months. Charan told the victim he loved her and wanted to marry her. On Thursday, Charan took his attraction for her to the next level and landed up at the victim’s house. He proposed to the victim again, but the girl refused. Charan didn’t take the rejection well and beat her up, resulting in her sustaining a few minor injuries.

A case has been registered against Charan under IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing pain), 354 (d) (stalking), and 506 (criminal intimidation).

The Harassment at Workplace (Prohibition and Redressal) Act of 2013, clearly states that each and every organization must provide a safe office environment for all women. Training sessions must be conducted in organizations to make the employees recognize harassment. Employees also need to be informed that any case of harassment must be informed to the Internal Complaints Committee. The company needs to also be stern and convey a message of zero tolerance policy towards harassment.

So far, Infosys has not revealed if these training sessions are conducted for the employees. But in the statement the company put out, it says, “Infosys is committed to providing an environment free of unlawful harassment and has a zero tolerance policy against harassment.”
